A butterfly caught between two states, not quite still, not quite moving.
This mother of pearl butterfly brooch is built on an asymmetric silhouette, each wing hand-inlaid with natural mother of pearl shell. The iridescence of shell does not photograph well. In pictures it looks white. In reality, it shifts, milky, then soft pink, then a flash of something that might be blue or green depending on where the light finds it. That is the material. That is the point.
At 50mm × 85mm it is a large piece, and the asymmetric design, one wing wider than the other, the way a real butterfly holds itself, gives it movement even when it is perfectly still. Designed in our London studio, where Art Nouveau's obsession with the natural world continues to find new form.
